About The Scholarship
African Excellence Centre at UWC Cape Town in South Africa is currently accepting applications for full scholarships from the students of the Sub-Sahara Africa to pursue Development Studies at Master's' and PhD levels at the Development Research Division of the institution. The objective of giving out the scholarship is to train the coming generation of leaders how to hnadle the socio-economic and political challenges which stem up from developing process.

Eligible Countries
Students from any of these countries can apply for the DRD (UWC South African) full Scholarships;
Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Congo (Brazzaville), Congo DRC, Cote d’Ivoire, Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissaau, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Reunion, Rwanda, Sao Tome and Principe, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe.

To Be Eligible
Applicants are advised to follow the recommended application guidelines and their chosen course requirements carefully and also;
  • You must be able to study full time at the UWC for the period of your study.
  • You should have an excellent academic record. 
  • You have be from Sub-Sahara Africa.
  • Women are encouraged to apply.
  • You need to have completed your degree from an internationally recorgnised institution.
  • Your previous degree which must have been completed not more thean 6 years, should be related to Public Administration or Development Studies.
  • Work or voluntary experience would be an added advantage.
  • An equivalence of 4 years degree is the entrance requirement for Master' programme.
  • Proof of English Prificiency test (IELTS or TOEFL) or letter from academic institution need to be presented.
Supporting Documents
Applicants are to upload the following documents in support of their application;
  • Application letter
  • A CV: Europass CV format should be follwed; see sample of the Europass CV format 
  • Academic transcript your previous university
  • Academic certificates ( certified copies)
  • A one-page paper about 1 of the following 4 topics to be written by MA candidates:
    • 1 François Bourguignon, a former Chief Economist of the World Bank referred to the “poverty growth inequality triangle”: Discuss this comment, critically evaluating the role of inequality in the current study of development in Africa.
    •  Write critically on perceptions about governance in Sub-Saharan Africa.
    •  It has been claimed that climate change could potentially interrupt progress toward the world without hunger. Consider the evidence for this claim and discuss how climate change might impact on food security.
    •  Discuss the relationship between social movements and civil society in a specific SSA country of your choice.
How to Apply
Applicants are to fill an online e-form to be considered for the scholarship and you should be very sure your application is completed before submitting as the e-form can only be submitted once.
